My family loves Mexican food so much, we might be Hawaiian / Mexican?

I always make a healthy appetizer for my family to enjoy while I make dinner.

They love Romaine Taco Bites!

Make Romaine Taco Bites! Healthy Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe (No salt, no msg, no nitrates!)

I love spicy food but not the sodium. Here is a recipe for homemade taco seasoning that I love.  The pre-made packets of taco seasonings in the grocery store have too much sodium and often have MSG or sodium nitrates which are terrible for you. Tip: Make extra! I quadruple this recipe and keep in the cabinet. Ole! Aloha!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 Tbs. chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp. dried cumin
  • 1 tsp. pepper

Directions:

Put all ingredients in a bowl or shaker bottle, I use a glass jar with a shaker lid.

How to make Romaine Taco Bites

Brown a package of extra lean ground turkey in a non stick pan.  Add taco seasoning to 1/4 cup hot water and stir.  Pour on turkey, mix.  Reduce heat to low and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Add on top of romaine lettuce leaves instead of fried taco shells. Serve with black beans and side salad. Option: Healthy Burritos: Wrap in whole wheat tortillas with a handful of cheese & chopped lettuce.
